Bob's nearly 25 years of experience in the communications technology field began after he graduated in 1981 from The Citadel. Upon leaving active military service, Bob went to Southern Bell as a sales representative. He spent the next 13 years with AT&T (after being transferred from Southern Bell at divestiture), holding various sales and technical management positions with increasing responsibilities.
As AT&T's Regional Vice President, based in Brussels Belgium, Bob was responsible for opening direct sales and service operations in 13 European countries, and developing sales channels in the Middle East and Africa. This operation had 10 employees in the UK when he assumed the position, and by 1995 the group had grown to more then 600 employees and is now Avaya’s (an AT&T spin-off) largest operation outside of North America.

The company was sold to Black Box Corp (NASDAQ BBOX) in August 2005.
