Porter Military Academy Alumni Association

In 1964, when Porter Military Academy merged with other schools to form Porter-Gaud, the military school's history-dating back to 1867-might have been forgotten. Instead, a small group of graduates formed an alumni association that would preserve the heritage for generations to come. Among their many projects, the Porter Military Academy Alumni Association (PMAAA) saved the old school's front gates and placed them where they now stand. They are also responsible for the memorial garden that lies just inside those gates. In the garden, there are memorials honoring the school's founder, Dr. Anthony Toomer Porter, as well as other headmasters, in an area paved by red bricks placed by PMAAA. When the Science & Technology Building was constructed, PMA alums took an active role in furnishing an archives room that now contains an amazing collection. Here and there on campus, one will find plaques the group has placed, along with a beautiful Civil War cannon that once stood at the entrance of PMA. Meeting monthly since 1964, this group of alums (now mainly in their 60's and 70's) has worked diligently to preserve their alma mater's proud history, generously passing it on to Porter-Gaud students of today.
