Bella the Hedgehog Is an Interesting Addition to the Porter-Gaud Zoo

Posted October 20, 2008

Ms. Settle, Queen of the Critters, has a new one in her collection! At the beginning of the year, she was given an African pygmy hedgehog named Bella! Bella was given to her by a friend who owned her for 2 years and developed an allergy to her. Hedgehogs are interesting animals that are native to some areas of Europe and Africa. They are insectivorous in the wild and Brits love to have them in their gardens to eat the pesky bugs!

They are quite similar to hamsters and gerbils as pets, with the exception of their short quills (which can be QUITE prickly)! They are relatively easy to care with a good variety of dry cat food, and a mealworm or cricket occasionally for proper nutrition. As you can see from the picture, when Bella is not "balled up" in her defensive mode, she is a cute little critter!!
