Middle School Students See Living History as Sandra Day O'Connor Visits the Lowcountry

    Posted October 5, 2009

Our students rarely have the opportunity to see historical figures in person, but selected students from the Middle School had that chance last week. Retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor came to Charleston to spread the word about her latest project. She developed a website at ourcourts.org to increase civic awareness for American middle school students. Students from Porter-Gaud, Ashley Hall, Burke Middle School, and Mason Prep joined the students at Charleston Day School on their campus to hear Justice O'Connor speak. She shared stories about her childhood and her role as the first woman on the Supreme Court. She encouraged the students to pursue public service and to learn the inner workings of our government.

  • Cross Country Teams Perform Well in Weekend Event

    Posted September 14, 2009

The Cyclone cross-country team hit the road early Saturday to participate in the Coaches' Classic Invitational, the biggest high school meet held in South Carolina. Over 2500 runners from 77 schools took part. The girls' team ran short-handed and was unable to record a team score, as senior captain Samantha German had to take the ACT test. The remaining four runners (Frances Grimball, Charlotte Infinger, Lillian Saul, and Sarah Dhaouahira) raced very well. For the third straight race, Frances was our top runner. She placed 73rd out of 322 finishers in our division.

The boys team ran without senior captain Wesley Mather, who was also taking the ACT. The young team of underclassmen (Brent Demarest, Layne Mather, Bradley McClelland, Evan Love, Brendan Ward, Landon Sanford, and Will Henry Lawrence) made a strong statement on the course.

    Welcome Back!

    Posted August 24, 2009

Thursday morning, the bell in the WATCH Tower rang out to signify the opening of school at Porter-Gaud. Students and faculty began pouring onto the green. This marked the beginning of the 2009-2010 school year, and students from grades 1-12 gathered to celebrate. Students from the Upper School spoke, Senior George Slotin did a beautiful job singing the National Anthem and Mr. Egleston spoke his words of welcome to the entire student body. This ceremony served as an appropriate reminder to students and faculty that while we have a variety of ages represented, we are all a part of one school family. Welcome back, students to the promise of another wonderful year at Porter-Gaud School.
