Middle & Upper School Admission (Grades 5-11)
The Application Process
STEP 1: Submit an Online Inquiry
Begin the process of learning more about the Porter-Gaud difference by completing our brief Online Inquiry Form for each potential applicant. This is a required step in the application process and will officially enter your family in our admission system.
STEP 2: Register to attend an Discover Porter-Gaud Open House and schedule a Student Shadow Day
Discover Porter-Gaud Open House
The best way to discover the difference a Porter-Gaud education would make for your Middle or Upper School child is to register for one of our Discover Porter-Gaud Open Houses. These parent-only events include an overview of the Middle and Upper School and a tour of the school. These events include a small-group presentation providing an overview of the Middle and Upper Schools, a question and answer session, and a campus tour that includes class visits and the chance to speak informally with current students, faculty, and staff members about their experiences at Porter-Gaud. You will see the school in action and develop a clearer understanding of what makes Porter-Gaud the premier independent school in Charleston.
Discover Porter-Gaud Open Houses are led by Director of Admission Ken Hyde. Throughout the application process, Ken will serve as your child’s advocate. He will seek to learn as much as possible about your child, your family, and the type of independent school education you’re seeking as well as answer your questions and provide you with the information you need to determine if Porter-Gaud is the right fit for your family.

Student Shadow Day
Please note: Registering for an Open House, a program built for parents and guardians, does not register your child to shadow.
Applicants for grades 5-11 are invited to spend the day shadowing their future classmates. Prospective students attend classes, lunch, and Community Time with a student host and immerse themselves in the Porter-Gaud experience.
Prospective students may shadow on a Group Shadow Day, or individually on a Monday, Tuesday, or Friday. To register your child for a group shadow day, use the link below. To register your child to shadow on a non-group shadow day, call Kathleen Beck at (843) 402-4726 to schedule.
If your family is traveling to Charleston from out of town or you are unable to attend one of our scheduled Open Houses, please contact Admission Assistant Kathleen Beck at 843.402.4726 or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org to schedule an individual parent meeting and campus tour.Parent meetings involve meeting with Ken Hyde, Director of Admission, taking a tour of the campus, observing classes, and speaking informally with current students, faculty, and staff members about their experiences at Porter-Gaud and generally last 60-90 minutes. During your discussion, we will seek to learn as much as possible about your child, your family, and the type of independent school education you’re seeking as well as answer your questions and provide you with the information you need to determine if Porter-Gaud is the right fit for your family. Ken will serve as your child’s advocate throughout the application process. Available meeting times include 900 a.m., 11:00 a.m., and 1:00 p.m., although additional times may be added as needed.
STEP 3: Complete the Application for Admission
Prospective parents should complete the following application documents online and submit the non-refundable $75 application fee.
STEP 4: Release of Records
Below you will find a Release of Records document. Please take this form to your child's current school. It authorizes your child's school to send the recommendation forms to Porter-Gaud, along with standardized test scores, transcripts, and other relevant information.
STEP 5: Register for Admission Testing
