Faith and honor have always been cornerstones of Porter-Gaud’s identity. As an Episcopal school, Porter-Gaud stands on the strong foundation of orthodox Anglican theology rooted in the Scriptures and expressed in the Book of Common Prayer. Because the school community is diverse, a climate of respectful dialog is the emphasis in matters of faith. The school respects different faith traditions while simultaneously emphasizing the school’s Episcopal core.
Dr. Porter’s motto for the school, WATCH, comes from II Timothy 4:5 and is emblazoned on the top of the bell tower, the highest point on campus. His emphasis on Christian education is expressed in the WATCH acronym: Words, Actions, Thoughts, Character, Habits. Worship, religious instruction, and moral and character development have always been central to the life of the school. Today the school continues this vibrant tradition in chapel, in the classroom, and in a variety of activities led by the school chaplains, who oversee the spiritual life of the entire school community.
