Athletics Information

Dear Cyclones,

Whether you’re a returning student or new to Porter-Gaud, we’re excited to have you as a part of the Cyclone family.  We have a multitude of opportunities for student-athletes to compete as Cyclones, and if you are interested in participating in a fall sport, this information will be of particular interest.

With all of the rapidly-changing circumstances surrounding the COVID-19 shutdown and reopening, many of our summer plans are still in a developmental stage.  At present, we expect that SCISA, our governing body, will allow us to resume outdoor conditioning and pre-season practices on June 1st.  Varsity football players and cross-country runners, along with any other teams conducting summer activities, will receive detailed information regarding those plans from their coaches, and we will make all of those details available as soon as we have them.  Any athletes participating in June and July activities will need to have an updated warning of inherent risk form on file.  You can print the form here:  https://www.scisa.org/images/pdf-files/athletics/20.21_Warning_of_Inherent_Risk.pdf

You will soon (around June 15th) be receiving a link to complete your required online athletic eligibility packet through schooldoc.com. Completion of this packet by July 17, 2020 will ensure your eligibility for all Cyclone sports for the remainder of the school year. Your physical exam is good for one year from the date it is administered; any physical exam done after April 1st is good for the entire upcoming year.

Additionally, all student-athletes in grades 7, 9, and 11 will need to take a new IMPACT baseline concussion test. Due to the current pandemic concerns, that test will be sent out as a link to be taken. at home.  If you are in any other grade and need a test, you’ll be contacted by our athletic training staff.  Any questions regarding these requirements can be directed to Lauren Frick, our head athletic trainer, at lfrick@portergaud.edu

Strength and Fitness Training – We are hopeful that we will be allowed to reopen the Scott Fitness Center later this summer.  As soon as we are able to do so, we will share that information with the school community.  Contact strength and conditioning Coach Travis Smith at tsmith@portergaud.edu with any questions about strength training at Porter-Gaud.

Summer Group Runs - Our cross-country coaches will conduct group runs at 7:00 AM on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays from June 4th through July 23rd.  Those runs will start and end under the Ravenel Bridge in Mt. Pleasant near the playground by the pier. All PG student-athletes are invited, but the expectation is that anyone who participates can safely run 4-5 miles in Charleston summer weather.

PG Certified Athletic Trainers: We are blessed here at Porter-Gaud to have two full-time certified athletic trainers on staff. They are your go-to resource for any sports-related injury treatment, diagnosis, rehab, etc. We will have a trainer on site for all of our athletic summer camps, and the training room will be open throughout the summer from 9am until 12 noon. Please contact head athletic trainer Lauren Frick with any questions at lfrick@portergaud.edu .

Coaching Contacts: Below is a brief list of contacts for coaches for our JV and varsity fall sports.

Middle School Sports: The following teams are offered at a bantam/middle school level.  Generally speaking, MS teams won’t have formal summer requirements and won’t begin practice until the first day of school.  The main point of contact over the summer for all MS teams is Al Wilson, awilson@portergaud.edu.

  • Football (grades 6-8)

  • Cheerleading (grades 5-8)

  • Cross-Country (grades 5-8).  No summer mileage requirement.

  • Volleyball (grade level teams at grades 5, 6, 7, and 8)

The first official day of fall sports practice is Thursday, July 30th, but some teams may begin later.  Some sports will additionally have summer camps or practices.

We look forward to seeing you in the fall!  GO CYCLONES!

Concussion Testing

Porter-Gaud takes the health of our scholar-athletes very seriously. We require concussion baseline testing before any student can participate in athletics. If we suspect a concussion during a sporting event, we use this baseline along with specialized software to test for symptoms and assess when a student is ready to resume normal activities. We will let you know how to schedule this testing with our athletic trainer.
