Q.– What year did you graduate from Porter-Gaud?
I graduated in 2009.
Q.– Where are you working and what is your current job title?
I am a pharmacist that works in the managed care industry. Currently, I work for Evernorth in Bid Strategy. Evernorth is a subsidiary of Cigna.
Q.– How did PG impact you in college and in your professional career?
Porter-Gaud positively impacted my future and provided me with the essential skills for success. My experience helped me to hone and to develop skills that prepared me to excel both academically and extracurricularly at attending UNC-Chapel Hill. While attending PG, I was active in many organizations and played sports. This definitely helped prepare me for college by developing time management skills that I used to stay disciplined and to achieve my goal of becoming a pharmacist. Characteristics that were instilled in me while attending PG, like networking, have helped me in my career and continue to do so. The PG network is expansive and found in every business industry. Make sure to utilize your resources and to find mentors in an area that you are interested in.
Q.– As a black person from Charleston, what does your heritage/culture mean to you?
Charleston is a historical city with a deep history, especially for the Black community. There was a time when people that looked like me couldn't open a bank account, go to Porter-Gaud, or own a house. A lot of us do not have the luxury to pinpoint exactly what country our ancestors are from, so Black heritage & culture are very important to me. It's all I know and it plays a pivotal role in who I am as a person and how I maneuver in the world. I am proud of my heritage. Black culture has influenced the sciences, arts, and various other industries in the world and it is important to continue to recognize and to honor Black influences and culture, especially in Charleston.
Q.– What advice would you give to a current student at Porter-Gaud?
If you live in the future you're anxious. If you're living in the past, you're depressed. So live in the present! Do your best everyday. Be intentional about the actions that you are taking and most importantly, find your passion, have fun, and spend time with your loved ones and friends.
Another piece of advice that I would have is to learn about personal finance early. Learning and being disciplined in that area, can set you up for success early.
