Congratulations to the Porter-Gaud Middle School Math Team who won the 2018 Charleston Chapter MATHCOUNTS Competition held earlier today at Mark Clark Hall located on the campus of the Citadel. More than 100 students took part in the event, representing more than 15 schools, both public and private, in Charleston, Dorchester, and Berkeley Counties. Each middle school was allowed to enter one team of 4 participants, as well as up to 6 other students who were allowed to compete individually. Porter-Gaud team members included Kevin Fan, Sophie Levenson, Callaghan Monnier and Becca White. Also competing individually were Sarah Allen, Sarah-Courtney Cavatoni, Ellis Chang, Brett Cox, Drew Dupps and James Winterfield.
Three rounds of intense competition provided the format for the contest, which included a Sprint Round (30 questions, 40 minutes, no calculator), a Target Round (8 questions, 24 minutes, calculator), and a Team Round (10 questions, 20 minutes, calculator). At the end of the day, the top 4 teams and top 4 individuals were announced and the results were as follows:
1st Place – Porter-Gaud School
2nd Place – Buist Academy
3rd Place – Christ Our King – Stella Maris
4th Place – Oakbrook Middle School
Storm Team 2's Chief Meteorologist Rob Fowler was on hand to present the winning Porter-Gaud team with its championship trophy. The team will represent the Charleston Chapter at the South Carolina State MATHCOUNTS Competition held next month in Aiken, SC.
To secure America's global competitiveness, MATHCOUNTS inspires excellence, confidence and curiosity in United States middle school students through fun and challenging math programs. With the generous support of all MATHCOUNTS sponsors and volunteers, and leadership of the National Society of Professional Engineers at the local and state levels, MATHCOUNTS is providing today's students with the foundation for success in science, technology, engineering and mathematics careers.
Way to go Cyclones!
