University of South Carolina Tournament, November 2018
Another successful autumn season concluded in Columbia where Porter-Gaud School competed against 26 teams from South Carolina and Georgia. As seen in the photograph below, the image of shoehorning over 150 coaches and players into a large classroom arena for pre-tournament logistics provides some indication of the scope of the event.
Porter-Gaud A missed the championship round by the narrowest of margins, going on to sweep their division in the consolations (7-2 on the day with an average of 283ppg and a margin of +68 versus the competition). Porter-Gaud B placed second in their qualifying pool and completed the day at 4-4 (with a bye, 198.8ppg). Victoria Johnson earned an individual 39.38ppg for Team B and placed #16 overall in the tournament; Hale Kilborn led Team A in scoring with a 38.89ppg individual average (#18 in the tournament). In only its second year, the Academic Team has established itself as a top tier team; further experience and practice may help us step over that imaginary line to the rarified air of Tournament Finals in the spring.
The Spring schedule, which includes the First Annual Porter-Gaud School Invitational, will be announced after the Christmas Break. In the interim, players and coaches will enjoy a hiatus until power-up classes and practices begin again in December. Our meritocracy 'resets' in January - come out and earn your spot. Everyone is welcome.
