Student and Family Wellness Programming UpdateDecember 19, 2024 Dear Porter-Gaud Families, As a school, we are committed to providing a supportive environment where each student can thrive academically, emotionally, and socially. In May, we shared strategic focus areas for the 2024-2025 school year for student wellness programming based on the results of the Authentic Connections High Achieving Schools Survey conducted in grades 7-12 in May 2023 and the feedback we received from in-person discussions. One of the common focus areas we identified across divisions was expanding and aligning substance use education. This initiative reflects our commitment to fostering a holistic wellness approach that equips students and families with the tools and knowledge to navigate challenges effectively and thrive as a community. In addition to offering substance use education to Upper School students through assemblies with Wake Up Carolina and similar organizations, we are also working to strengthen substance use prevention learning opportunities in the Middle School. While our substance use numbers in the 2023 survey were not significant in grades 7 and 8, we understand the importance of proactive prevention education. In January, we are partnering with the Porter-Gaud Parent Association (PGPA) to host Chris Herren, a former professional basketball player, speaker, and wellness advocate. He is scheduled to speak to our Middle and Upper School students during the school day and will speak to parents and caregivers on the evening of Thursday, January 30. Click here to learn more about his program and to RSVP. We are incredibly grateful to the PGPA and other generous donors for their support in expanding our student wellness programming and their sponsorship of this visit. We strongly encourage you to save this date on your calendar and attend this impactful event to help foster meaningful discussions with your children. Your student may have questions or want to talk about the presentation. To help you make the most of this opportunity to connect with your child in an effective way, we will also provide parent resources to help guide these conversations closer to the assembly date. If you have any questions or concerns about your child participating in this assembly, please contact your division head or division counselor. We will have additional counseling and support resources available for students on this day. Thank you for your partnership as we work together to make strides toward a healthier, more supportive community. Sincerely, Silvia Davis, Upper School Head |
