KEY ACTIVITIES AND EVENTS
Weekly Updates
We've had a fantastic week in the Lower School! Please review the updates and information below.
Reminder for Visiting Campus
Please remember to sign in at the Lower School main office with Kim Doyle after being buzzed in. This important process is in place to ensure safety on our campus. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
Extended Day
We want to remind everyone that Extended Day is available every day after school until 5:40 p.m. We have monthly plans available, and you can drop in any afternoon you need coverage (all you have to do is mark your student as 'Extended Day' on SchoolPass). You can view all of the details on the Extended Day web page. Please note our pricing as it has changed and there is now a $5 charge for Extended Day beginning at 3:10 until 3:30 p.m.
When Parents and Caregivers Are Away
If you plan to be out of town and your child will be here at school while you are away, please send an email to Kim Doyle (kdoyle@portergaud.edu), Anna McCubrey (amccubrey@portergaud.edu), and the school nurses (nurse@portergaud.edu). Please include the dates of your planned trip and the names and phone numbers of those who will take care of your child while you are away. This information is very important. Simple questions come up that we may need answers to (like dismissal), and in case of sickness or injury, the nurses may call the parent or caregiver who is staying with the child. We appreciate your partnership.
Book Collection
Our book collection for Lowcountry Orphan Relief continues through September 13. Please encourage your child to bring a new book for another child in our community to enjoy.
Student-Parent/Guardian Handbook Acknowledgement Forms Due Tomorrow
One parent or guardian must sign an acknowledgment form for each student in their family after reading the Lower School Student-Parent/Guardian Handbook by Friday, September 6. Parents and guardians can access the form by logging into MyPG and clicking on the yellow banner at the top of the page.
Author Visit and Book Purchase Opportunity
We are so excited to welcome back authors, Mary Alice Monroe and Angela May, on September 18. They will meet with each grade level and share their process as writers! If you would like to purchase a signed copy from the The Islanders series, you may do so through this link. Books purchased before September 16 will be delivered the day of their visit!
Raising Readers: What Parents Can Do?
Parents hear all the time that it’s important to read to kids. But why exactly is that? The benefits of reading together go far beyond learning to read.
- Reading to young children is an important way to help them build language skills. It exposes them to new words and ways of using language. It also helps them learn general information about the world, which makes it easier for them to understand new subjects once they get to school.
- Books also help children build skills and learn how to handle challenging feelings. Parents can use reading time as a chance to talk about emotions and how to cope with them. For example, you might say: “Have you ever felt as angry as the girl in this book? What would you do if you did?”
- Even a few minutes of reading together gives you and your child a chance to slow down and connect with each other. The sensory experience of sitting with you and hearing your voice also engages their brain in a way that makes learning easier.
- The important thing is for your child to hear words and language and to have books as part of their daily life. Any steps you’re able to take can make a big difference.
